He graduated as a medical doctor in 1990 from the University of Malta. In 1993 he started his training in Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom where he spent almost 6 years before returning to his homeland.
In the UK he worked in various Eye Hospitals including Bristol and Manchester. In 1995 he was admitted as a Fellow in The Royal College of Ophthalmologists. During his last year in the UK he subspecialized in corneal disease and surgery.
In 2001 Franco Mercieca was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at St Luke’s / Mater Dei hospital with special interest in anterior segment surgery.
In 2005 he set up a small eye bank to cater for the local needs in Malta.
In 2010 he was admitted as Fellow in the European Board of Ophthalmologists.
Franco Mercieca is specialised in cataract and corneal surgery with special interest in Refractive solutions.
