What kind of refractive error do you have?

In the normal (emmetropic) human eye the refractive error of the transparent outer layer of the eye (cornea) and the axial length of the eye, balance out. If this is not so, the incoming rays do not arrive at the optic nerve layer (retina) in focus; hence creating refractive errors.

What are these?

  1. Nearsighted (myopic) people have difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly. The eyeball is too long, so the incoming rays conjugate in front of the optic nerve (retina) forming a blurred image.
  2. The eyeball of farsighted (hyperopic) people is too short, so the incoming rays conjugate behind the optic nerve (retina) and these people will have difficulty in seeing near objects clearly. Elder people will also experience difficulty in seeing distant objects as well as near.
  3. Both near sighted and farsighted eyes can be astigmatic as well. In an astigmatic eye, the cornea has an irregularly spherical shape like a rugby ball. In this case the incoming rays are skewed in different directions and the resulting image will be blurred.
  4. Presbyopia is a natural process linked to aging, in which the lens loses its elasticity, thus making it difficult to focus on close objects, to read and use the computer.
