Francis Carbonaro

Francis Carbonaro graduated from the University of Malta Medical School in 1999. After a couple of years in General Practice he moved to the UK in 2003; where he gained all his postgraduate Ophthalmology training. After 1.5 years in Glasgow he moved to London, where he carried out the rest of his training and was awarded his FRCOphth in 2012. He has been on the Specialist Register for Ophthalmology in the UK since this same year.

He was also awarded a PhD from Kings’ College, University of London, for his research on Glaucoma in 2010. The title of his Doctoral Thesis is “Genetic Epidemiology of Glaucoma Endophenotypes: A Twin study”.

Mr Carbonaro worked in some of the top Hospitals in London, including Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, King's College Hospital and subspecialty Fellowship Training in Glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

He has 14 peer reviewed publications and has presented at over 25 UK National and International meetings and is still actively involved in research in Malta. He has been awarded several prizes for his research in the UK.

Ivan Vella

Ivan Vella graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1986. Before that he trained in internal medicine and surgery for two years. Following that he obtained the licence of the Royal College of Physicians and become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of London.

He obtained a Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1985. He did an ophthalmology residency at St Luke’s Hospital Malta, Leeds General Infirmary, Royal Liverpool Eye Hospital and Middlesex Hospital London. He was appointed consultant ophthalmic surgeon in 1989.

Franco Mercieca

Franco Mercieca graduated as a medical doctor in 1990 from the University of Malta. In 1993 he started his training in Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom where he spent almost 6 years before returning to his homeland.

In the UK he worked in various Eye Hospitals including Bristol and Manchester. In 1995 he was admitted as a Fellow in The Royal College of Ophthalmologists. During his last year in the UK he subspecialized in corneal disease and surgery.

In 2001 Franco Mercieca was appointed consultant ophthalmologist at St Luke’s / Mater Dei hospital with special interest in anterior segment surgery. In 2005 he set up a small eye bank to cater for the local needs in Malta. In 2010 he was admitted as a fellow in the European Board of Ophthalmologists.

Franco Mercieca is specialised in cataract and corneal surgery with special interest in Refractive solutions.

Jan Janula

Jan Janula is a Czech and Maltese citizen, an experienced surgeon, clinician and teacher who has been living and practicing ophthalmology in Malta for the last 28 years. He graduated from medical school of Masaryk University Brno and got a second degree specialisation in Ophthalmology from the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Prague.

He was awarded a PhD in Ophthalmology in Charles University, Prague and FEBO from European Board of Ophthalmology in Paris. He also teaches ophthalmology in Malta Medical School and a Senior Examiner of European Board of Ophthalmology.

Melvin Gouder

Melvin J. Gouder graduated as a medical doctor from the University of Malta in 1999, followed by specialist training in England and Scotland where he obtained his membership in ophthalmic surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and subsequently became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Furthermore, he had specialist training in Switzerland leading to a Superior Specialist Diploma from the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI) in Lugano.

He is also a visiting senior lecturer at the University of Malta and an examiner at the Malta Medical School.
